I am obsessed with graceful degradation, or rather I was obsessed, and am now recovering. I would like to speed up this non-intereest for 2 reasons.
1. the phrase "graceful degradation is really creepy (this is definately why I love it so much).
2. The whole GD scene is sort of fascist and gross.

I have brought back the the Little News. There is no CSS, there is no Java, there is only html, with minimal formatting, at that. So pure... I needed to get that out of my system, I think. I actually really like the browser default look. Do you think I can get away with calling it art?

Does anyone else care about this inane crap? Do you think the new look is nice? I got into the whole graceful degradation thing partially cuz of the icky name, but mostly because the idea of making my information easily acsessible to anyone on any type of browser really appealed to me.

Anyhow, I don't want to carry on this tirade anymore. Any comments or thoughts on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Lately, I have decided that I do not like that.

Aside from contributing to the pathetic rush I get off of my web-reckognition (there's even an "adult" link now!), I'm not sure I want to be linked that closely with TIG. THe majority of the websites that come up under my name are TIG related. Why does that make me feel weird?

I assume most of you are tech-savvy, but for those of you who don't know, the more links that exist to a website from another, and the more times people click these links, the more likely your website is to come up #1 on a search engine. It doesn't hurt when those links are included on one of googles favoured pages. I think I already mentioned that I am a pathetic fame-addict who glories in the pumped-up hits my website receives from its TIG promotion, but I would like to point it out again.

In other news, for all you girls who miss FINE BOYS, I haven't forgotten, I'm just taking my sweet time. If you know any beautiful young men, 18-25, in the Toronto area, who will pose naked for me to paint them, I would like to paint their portrait. I'm really good, I'll post some pictures soon. It helps if they think they themselves are handsome. I do not promise to sleep with them, because I am trying to find a little something for everyone and that means not all of yous are the something for me (even if I can see how other girls would find you cute).

In conclusion, new Fine Boys out by 2005, any boys who will let me paint them naked are welcome with a third party reccomendation.

Labour Day Sell-Out

I need a job, badly, and today I walked into a business to apply for one. I did this on the day which is supposed to be the day for the worker, where we get to barbeque and swim and sack race, all in honour of our own hard work and the union people who sacrificed to make the workplace fair, and equitable, with plenty of vacation time.

It wouldn't be so bad, except that the place I was applying to wasn't just a workplace without unions. It is a workplace that is ANTI-UNION. If you're going to sell out, you may as well go all the way.

Is that really so bad? Well, to a part-time worker who enjoys the perks of a sligtly-above minimum wage job, it's pretty groovy. For full time workers, there are oodles of benefits. Who needs a union in a situation like that?
This is who needs a union: the person who is suffering from discrimination, harrasment or other unfair working conditions (like unpaid overtime) at the hands of an unscrupulous supervisor. For many of these employees, speaking up means loosing their job. Unions make it easier for us to have our complaints heard without being afraid to complain in the first place.

Go unions!

I'll still take the job if they'll have me, tho', I need the money that badly. You might be wondering, "what is this strange anti-union corporation?" It is called Whole Foods, and it is a luxury grocery store that sells expensive food to rich people who buy it because it makes them feel like they are saving the earth, which they are not. What they are doing is buying a trendy life style which they do not have to offer any other form of commitment save for money. While they shop for imported cheeses and wild seafood, the rest of us are eating genetically modified, pesticide-laden, over fertilized, over-processed food that is killing the planet faster than it is killing us. Too bad we can't live without our planet, otherwise it wouldn't be such a bad deal.

The moral of the story is: every one of your actions has a consequence. The ones that are positive don't make up for the ones that are negative, especially when the positive isn't as far-reaching as you think.

So, the number one Olympic star for Canada, Perdita Felicien, came to nothing yesterday. Everyone was freaked, most understandaly Perdita herself. That same day, Canadian athletes won a gold and silver medal. I have no idea who those people are. In all honesty, I don't really care for the Olympics much either. But I knew who Perdita Felicien is.
In Toronto, where I live, a massive campaign for Nike put her face all over the subway system. This lady was gonna win. During Olympic coverage the CBC interviewed her non-stop. The interviewers were so cocky, "you're going to win, Perdita, how does it feel?" She was always so awesome in those interviews. Her number one rival, the American, even ripped her leg up, and had to sit out of the finals. The gold was Perdita's, no problem. O, Canada!

And then she fell on the first hurdle.

No doubt, the lady is dissapointed. That sucks. But somewhere in my head, it seems almost cooler that she stumbled. Here is an athlete, the acknowledged WORLD CHAMPION, and no one really knew or cared about her until we thought she couldn bring us home the gold, and maybe sell some athletic gear along the way. Canada is notorious for underfunding its athletes, so it's pretty likely that she spends non-olympic years not only in relative obscurity, but relative poverty as well. Then, all of a sudden, there was pressure, not from coaches or parents, but a whole damned country, who didn't even know who she was until the beggining of this month.

So, maybe the stumble was some kind of subconcious kiss off to all of us. She really is still the world champion, her numberone rival was out of the race, and the Olympics are a big circus anyways. If I was her I'd cry for the cameras and laugh all the way home. This time next year, people will still remeber Perdita Felicien, but probably won't even know whihc sports we won our gold medals in, let alone who won them.

Isn't that strange?

This here is a still from my movie. It's a bit old, and I just transfered it from VHS, so it is of a distinctly worn-out quality. I must admit, I sort of like the strange colors that come from bad lighting and cheap, old videotape. I went to go see people's old home movies with Amy today, and I thought they were all beautiful. Bad to non-existent sound, but with lovely unreal colors and long meditative shots. I forgot how easy it is to make movies.

In the meantime, here is another vacation memory.

The picture is of me, right before the solstice party on Solomon's Dome in Dawson City, Yukon. A few days earlier, I had barfed and shat bile for 2 days as the result of the stomach flu I had contracted cleaning up other peoples bilous fluids in my heady and glamourous job as a Chamber Maid.

That, coupled with my pre-paycheque diet of canned pineapple, chickpeas and foraged plantlife, resulted in the skelleton costume being more of a sad commentary on my situation than intended.

I did not realise how much until after I saw the picture.

The first: Sometimes, when you think a person doesn't like you because they're "stuck up", it's because they are just as shy and weird as you are, and you're giving them the exact same vibe back.

The second: If yu are feeling stressed out, and you let that stress make other situations more stressful, then when you are faced with a really stressful situation you will just go insane and weird everyone out.

OH boy! Now I've got an ART SITE for all you folks to gawk at.

No Flash

No audio

No blinking effects

Just good, old-fashioned, straight-up HTML.

Not much up right now, just some bedrooms, but I'm hoping to get some movies up soon. Before that, drawings.

Here's a little sample...

Pheremones!

Hey, I just got a copy of a report by Claus Wedekind about pheremone research. Is anyone else really interested in this stuff? A lot of people tend to focus on pheremones as they relate to sex, but I am very interested in the way we use pheremones to relate to everyone.

For instance, we all know that many animals "communicate" through smell, but I am coming to beleive that communication is a misleading term, as itmakes it sound like concious reception of information. What is being transmitted is certainly complex, and carries information about such things as health, fertility, and genetic relationships, but I think that when you consider that we receive the same information through smell, yet do not process it on a concious level, that pheremone communication by all animals, including ourselves, occurs on a level so basic we do not conciously process it.

I have heard people theorize that western society's obsession with obliterating body odour and the hair that traps and diffuses it may be part of the reason why there is such an explosion of alienation and social problems. I am not sure: is it a cause, or something we have adopted to perpetuate our isolation?

I just read a blog, which is something I usually do not do knowingly. It was actually pretty entertaining, like watching reality shows. The girl reminded me of myself if I had been raised in a very different situation.

So, now, I sort of get the appeal of reading people's blogs. Demystifying!

Do any of you read blogs? I guess you do, if you're reading this...

In the meanwhile...

The Little News is back online after a long hiatus. Look for an upcoming expose on censorship real soon, and an interview with a famous old guy (unless security kicks us out first). If you can guess who it is, you win a prize!

Oh boy, I made $20 today selling a doll, then I spent all that money on comic books and beer.

I wish I had a picture of it to show you, but I don't.

In the meantime, here is another vacation memory.

The picture is of me, right before the solstice party on Solomon's Dome in Dawson City, Yukon. A few days earlier, I had barfed, and shat bile for 2 days as the result of the stomach flu I had contracted cleaning up other peoples bilous fluids in my heady and glamourous job as a Chamber Maid.

That, coupled with my pre-paycheque diet of canned pineapple, chickpeas and foraged plantlife, resulted in the skelleton costume being more of a sad commentary on my situation than intended.

I did not realise how much until after I saw the picture.

Dammit.
